1 year, 6 countries!I

The girls were INSANELY lucky in 2015, hitting 5 countries.  China, Japan, US, Italy and Vatican City.  Yes, we counted the Vatican, but did not count Germany, which we flew through.  Through all this, you know what struck me?  They didn't know the northwest and had never been to Canada!  So, over the break between Christmas and New Years, we decided to round out the year with a sixth country:  Canada.  Easy trip, two nights, no problem!  It was good - but cold.  Documented below.

Capilano Bridge.  It is one of the longest suspension bridges in the world.  A little terrifying as you are bouncing on it! 



At the other side is a series of other bridges with excellent information in the environment.  Great stuff for kids!


We even got to check the wingspan of each family member.  Sadly, my photo didn't turn out well.  ;-)

Next up, we went to the Dr. Sun Yat Sen Classical Chinese Garden.  It was built in the 90s by classically trained craftsmen from China.  We happened upon a tour just as it was starting and got some information on it.  It was an interesting visit to compare to what we saw in China.  Even though most of our tours overseas were distracted (because of the girls) we clearly picked up a lot of information and noticed differences.  For example, the entry ways to the rooms did not have the ledges to keep the spirits out.  Likely the result of the Canadian version of the ADA.  There were other examples too.  Much to Louise's delight, we also happened upon a wedding.








Those photos above were all from Vancouver.  The photos below are from Guyi Gardens in Shanghai (CNY last year).  Notice the similarities?  See if you can pick out the most striking difference?




Got it?  The difference is that there was actually blue sky in Vancouver!  Though both had similar temperatures!

Next up:  The Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia.  Really amazing place - and generally warm!

Who doesn't love a picture?  None of these are worth a posting, but all were momentous enough to take a picture (usually with a phone.)  So, bear with me... They don't serve water with meals.  You have to ask.  And, it really needs to be bottled and it is the second most expensive thing on the menu (next to the wine).  So imagine my surprise when this showed up?! Bread is sold in half loaves.  Very odd.  Steve found someone who would sell him a whole loaf.  We were so excited.  Still the only one we've found. This showed up at work.  It took me a minute to realize it is a business card filing box.  It is a really nice one - made of metal!  Remarkable.  And, people keep giving me business cards, so I get it now... I loved this - a notebook "made with future technology, for tomorrow's most outstanding achievers."  Still waiting to understand the future technology of paper.  But, happy to have it! ...

Tokyo - better late than never!

Lest you think that we were tied solely to China or that the only reason to go to Japan was for Taylor Swift (see OMG Taylor Swift!), we actually were really looking forward to seeing the city.  Several reasons: It is Tokyo.  What more do you need? I graduated from high school in the 80's and college in the 90's.  So, I've spent quite a bit of time thinking about Japan!  Including part of my thesis defense. It struck us as a little bit odd that our children had been two two countries:  US and China.  We needed to diversify. OMG!!!  Taylor Swift!!! I have to admit, the trip didn't have our usual amount of advance rigor.  But, we had a hotel (large by Tokyo standards, small by all others!) and we generally knew how to get from the airport to the hotel.  Otherwise, we winged it.  The strategy tends to work out pretty well for us.  Phew... OMG!!! TAYLOR SWIFT!!!!!!!!

Did you know that we are a Taylor Swift family?  There - I've said it.  I own it.  There is no one in this family who is actually the right age, but we are all pretty well obsessed. It all started with Louise in Kindergarten.  She home from school one day singing Never.  As in, we are never ever getting back together.  It was catchy.  I found some more of her music and then a little more.  Louise gobbled it up.  I printed lyrics, Louise memorized.  I researched and realized that Taylor Swift is a GREAT role model. She writes, she entertains, she is a smart business woman and she controls her image super well.  Why not double down?  We did. On our way to New York on our way to Shanghai, I had to download her 1989 album while the movers were packing up - inconveniently it dropped in the middle of our move!  Lets just say that we've gone to some real measures.
